On the Brink of Adventure

There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind. -C.S. Lewis

Change, it’s a dirty word that I despise as much as snow, condiments, budget, stale, and mosquitoes. Don’t even get me started on bugs. In our home, my husband is the fearless bug slayer.

At work, when a manager told me about a change he knew I wouldn’t like, he’d phrase it as “an OPPORTUNITY.” I call BS. It’s meant more work and less time to do it.

What makes change tolerable to me is to see it as confronting it like a boss in a video game. I make it exciting so that I can look forward to it happening. Say, I don’t want to go grocery shopping…I can pick up dinner from the deli so I don’t have to cook dinner and reward myself with a candy bar. Yay! That one is more of a chore. Here’s change: I’m about to re-write a novel that I’d rather not put the time and effort into. So, I’m going to use that time to make it the best thing I’ve ever written to impress anyone who reads it!

I love summer. In Michigan it takes so long to arrive, and in the meantime we have to put up with melting snow, spring allergies, and trying to avoid flattening stupid squirrels that can’t make up their minds about which way to go. Just pick a side of the road and go there! Don’t zig zag back and forth while I slam on my brakes to spare your silly little life!

Anyway…

Next week I’m embarking on an adventure I didn’t even know I’d be taking a few days ago. I’m making packing lists, buying snacks for the ride, and daydreaming A LOT of the weather being sunny and in the 90’s. It’s a chance to get away from the typical everyday routine. I’ll be helping out some relatives and spend quality time with them.

When I get back, I’ll be faced with the huge project of re-writing that novel I was talking about. I’m going to get focused on exercising and watching my diet more (it will be a sad day when I give up pop tarts though).

Summer is almost here and I can’t wait. In the mean time, I have a shopping list to make and some STAR WARS to watch tonight.

May the FOURTH be with you!

Found Flowers

2016-05-01 19.46.48 - Copy

This morning I spotted a glimpse of yellow flowers growing by our apartment. I’m no horticulturalist, so I have no idea what kind they are. They had big, thorny leaves before I cut those off. They smell great, just ask my allergies. But…pretty!

Flowers typically bring this Bible verse to mind:

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

-Isaiah 40:8 NIV

Any flowers given to me don’t tend to last very long…I always forget to water them. Oh well. Free was the right price, and the joy of finding them is even better.

Five Favorite Things

What a perfect spring week in Michigan! A typical week includes all four seasons within 48 hours, but this week was what everyone believes spring should look like. Everything is blooming thanks to almost daily April showers. It’s warm enough that I don’t NEED a coat, but cool enough that I still WANT one. My allergies have gotten a little better, so I can finally appreciate the leaves growing on the trees, the colorful flowers, and the freshly trimmed grass.

So, here are my favorite things of the week:

1. Spring Thunderstorms

storm

We had a couple nights of weather activity. My husband and I shut off all the lights in the apartment, opened up the curtains, and sat on the couch to watch. Storm watching is one of my all-time favorite things to do, and it’s great to have someone to share that with.

2. Pretty Flowers

Flower

Specifically, daffodils. There’s a few others I like, but nothing quite says spring like spotting daffodils in a neighbors yard.

3. Fresh, Warm Air

warm air

Winter always seems to last too long. When I step outside and it’s not below freezing temperatures, I’m happy. If it gets above sixty-five, I’m definitely a happy person.

4. Choosing Desktop Backgrounds

I enjoy catering my computer to my needs. Just like the picture on my calendar changes once a month, I like my computer and iPhone to follow suite. They’re typically themed around the season, sometimes I’ll go with abstract images, or animal themed. I love owls, corgis and hamsters.

5. My Singing Monsters

I’ve been playing this world-building game ever since I got my first Ipod touch. I don’t know why. I can’t explain why I like this game. The monsters are so creatively unique plus they sing! So weird yet so awesome!

If you end up downloading My Singing Monsters, I should warn you that the songs they sing are highly addicting!

Five Things Friday

This week mid-Michigan has been blooming and growing. So many beautiful flowers. There’s a squirrel that comes to the window everyday and eats the tree leaf buds, I’ve named him Buddy. The cats don’t seem concerned, but I like our daily guest.

Earlier in the week, before allergies knocked me out, I made a trip to Lansing to drop off the dog. My mother entertained me by going to Biggby Coffee, if you’re not from the Michigan area, just believe me when I say it’s better than Starbucks. Then we went to the pet store, 5 Below and Staples. Oh the office supply joy.

1. Washi Tape

Oh, how I love decorating my mundane office supplies with washi tape. It makes everything POP and it instantly becomes more pleasing to the eye. I found an $8 roll of washi tape for 50 cents at Staples! Oh yeah, I love me a bargain!

2. Panda/Owl Tab Separator

Another great find at Staples! At first I questioned myself “Isn’t this something a middle schooler would use?” But then again, who cares? It’s silly and cute and I love them!

3. Colored Pens

This has been on my Amazon.com wish list for WAY too long! I caved in and got them when I spotted the ones I wanted at Target. You may have noticed, but I love using color with my to-do lists (please don’t ask how my spring cleaning is coming along). I love using the light blue and pink together, they’re such happy colors!

4. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

kimmy

Okay, I have a love/hate relationship with this show. Amidst all the wacky, crazy, “what did I just hear?” crud, I can’t help but liking the character Kimmy. So much bad stuff has happened to her. She was kidnapped for 15 years! When she’s freed, she doesn’t know how to act as a grown-up. She wears light-up shoes, struggles with make-up, and she’s ALWAYS perky and positive! It’s like when you’re living on your own for the first time and you realize that you can have candy for dinner! Aw yeah!

5. Peppermint Oil

peppermint oil

Did I mention that my allergies have been kicking me all week? I’m living a hazy existence inside my head. Most OTC allergy medications don’t do much for me. So, I looked up essential oils that would help. I made a blend of lavender, lemon and peppermint oil. I put them in a roll-on perfume bottle with some vodka. Oh my goodness, the sinus relief! The trio of essential oils work as a great antihistamine to bring down inflammation. I also diffuse them in my air purifier. Added bonus: the apartment smells amazing!

It’s going to be a great weekend! How can it not be with the power of peppermint, season 2 of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and some new office supplies to play with?

Allergies vs. Kristina

Isn’t it great when you have your whole day planned out? You know exactly what to do and when to do it.

That was supposed to be me today!

This was the plan:

Wake up early, get my free McGriddle (thanks McDonald’s Monopoly), go to work early. Walk by the river at lunch. Make a grocery list, go to the store, make dinner. Go out for ice cream. Sit down and read before bed.

This is what happened:

Woke up in the early afternoon. My sinuses nearly paralyzed me. Took allergy meds, didn’t make it into work. It got so hot in the apartment that I felt even more miserable. Succumbed to McDoanld’s for dinner (worth it, won a free buttermilk chicken sandwich) took more meds, now I’m sitting at the desk with a box of tissues.

It took me nearly fifteen minutes to read through a short blog post just now. Half of that was spent trying to mentally pronounce the word lugubrious.

My allergies may have won the day, but there’s still five more days left in the week and I shall be victorious!
